In the evening the Rose Queen’s crowning takes place after some acrobatic ballet surrounded by a lot of theatrical fog. After the crown has been placed on her head, she comes to the front of the stage accompanied by her maids-in-waiting and has to stand there, in formal, frozen happiness for a full fifteen minutes while the rest of the spectators and special diplomatic guests enjoy a magnificent firework display. The incongruity of this extended pose is highlighted by the beat of the music. A black American voice reiterates ‘funk you, funk you’, though speaker distortion transforms that into a message that is more sexually explicit.
